Summer Quartets

May 17, 2010

I’m selling Masses! Shades of the unreconstructed mediaeval Church!

Well, it’s not quite as bad as it sounds: no Indulgences will change hands.

All summer, till the end of September, the High Mass will be sung by a quartet drawn from the Choir. and hopefully they will all be sponsored by a member of the congregation or a friend of St Clement’s. The Mass that Sunday will be for the donor’s special intention. It can be in thankfulness for something, in memory of a loved one departed, a petition for the future. The cost will be $240.

Maybe someone who reads this blog might like to sponsor one such Mass. If so, please send your check to St Clement’s, marked “Summer Quartet” and (if you wish) naming the intention, which we will print in the Sunday bulletin. I already have seven of the sixteen Sundays covered, so there are nine to go.

And remember, you can hear the Mass each week via podcast. Visit the S. Clement’s website and click through.

Girolamo Frescobaldi, the great early seventeenth-century organist of St. Peter’s in Rome, whose playing could reputedly move audiences of thousands to tears, composed a collection of three organ masses entitled “Fiori Musicali” (musical flowers). That might be a good name for this program. It is standard for altar flowers to be donated every week. Why shouldn’t the concept be extended to music?
