Corpus Christi

May 12, 2010

Bishop Rodney Michel is to be our Preacher at the High Mass of Corpus Christi this year. Bishop Michel is proving to be a very fine Assisting Bishop in the Diocese of Pennsylvania, concentrating on getting to know the clergy and visiting the parishes. His ever-open door has been a life-line for several of the clergy. As we wait to hear the final verdict on our diocesan Bishop, Charles Bennison, Bishop Michel has turned us from internal squabbles to the loving Gospel of a faithful and welcoming Church.

The Mass is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 3. I’m glad to say, St Clement’s has not followed the sad trend of moving Feasts from their traditional day to the next Sunday. Like the awful Saturday night “Sunday Mass”, this is just laziness. I heard from a friend recently who had been to a Sung Mass in an RC church (with a sermon) and had emerged breathless and totally unedified thirty-five minutes later. We won’t get out of St Clement’s on Corpus Christi till 9 p.m, but when we do, we will feel we have earned champagne at the torchlight reception in the church garden!

But you have, alas, followed the sad trend of celebrating the Holy Mysteries in the evening.

    Most unsound.

Since our blessed Lord instituted the Mass on a Thursday evening, who am I to differ?
