Mass Book

May 27, 2009

I’m working on a new Mass Book to put in the pews of St Clement’s. It will help newcomers and those who are not used to the traditional rites to follow the Mass. It will consist of three elements: 1) the text of the Mass; 2) pictures illustrating the actions of the Mass; and 3) some private devotions or explanations. The knack will be to make clear how all three are related.

For example, the Asperges or Vidi Aquam texts will be given in Latin and English; there will be a picture of the priest sprinkling the congregation; and this will be accompanied by a short statement saying that the ceremony is intended to remind us of our common Baptism which incorporates us into the Body of
Christ and gives us entrance into the community which is about to celebrate the Holy Mysteries of his Body and Blood.

I hope that the finished product will be an attractive booklet which will be not only an aid to devotion, but also a means of helping people to appreciate the structure and beauty of the Mass. There are all sorts of ways to do this, and someone like myself, who am very familiar with it all, might assume too much knowledge in my readers.

So if any of you have ideas and suggestions of what should go into this book, I’d be grateful to hear from you. One idea which I like, is to draw the pictures from many different Masses, and not to try to show the same Mass throughout. This will enable me to include some of the wonderful vestments St Clement’s possesses as well as different clergy saying or singing the Mass. I would love to include some of the special ceremonies of the liturgical year, but there won’t be room for that. But maybe you have favourite private devotions I could include, and if so I’d love to hear from you.

Will copies of the Mass book be available for the general public?

Yes, we’ll be selling copies in St Clement’s, and also would be willing to mail them out.
